This service allows you to seamlessly move money between your PayPal account and M-Pesa wallet, opening up global ecommerce opportunities while maintaining easy access to your funds locally.
The PayPal to M-Pesa service is a money transfer solution that enables joint PayPal and M-Pesa customers to move funds between their own accounts.
This service is specifically designed for moving money between accounts held in the same name—it does not support transfers between different people.
Prerequisites: What You Need
Before you can withdraw from PayPal to M-Pesa, you must meet the following requirements:
- An eligible PayPal account registered at paypal.com/ke
- An active M-Pesa account with Safaricom
- Both accounts must be in the same name (this is mandatory)
- The M-Pesa app installed on your smartphone
Step 1: Link Your PayPal and M-Pesa Accounts
Before making any withdrawals, you need to link your two accounts. Here's how:
- Log in to the M-Pesa app using your M-Pesa PIN or biometrics
- From the home screen navigation bar, tap the Global Payments tab
- Select the PayPal mini app, which will direct you to the link account option
- Enter your PayPal email address and password
- Log in to your PayPal account
- Review the terms and conditions displayed on the page
- Scroll down and select Agree and Connect
- You will receive a confirmation notification from Safaricom stating: "Dear customer you have successfully linked your M-Pesa account 07xxxxxxxxxx to your PayPal account"
Step 2: Withdraw Money from PayPal to M-Pesa
Once your accounts are linked, withdrawing funds is straightforward:
- Open the M-Pesa app and log in using your M-Pesa PIN or biometrics
- Navigate to the Global Payments tab from the home screen
- Select the PayPal mini app
- Your available balance will be displayed in both USD and KES
- Tap on the Withdraw to M-Pesa tab
- Enter the amount you want to withdraw in USD and press continue
- Enter your M-Pesa PIN to authorize the transaction
- You will receive a pop-up confirming that the withdrawal request is successful, along with a transaction ID
Confirmation Messages
After a successful withdrawal, you will receive two SMS confirmations:
First message from Safaricom: "Transaction [ID] completed. You have added Ksh XX to your M-Pesa on [date] at [time] from your PayPal account"
Second message from M-Pesa: "Transaction [ID] Confirmed. You have received Ksh XX from PAYPAL WITHDRAW [number] on [date] at [time]. New M-Pesa balance is Ksh XX"
